PJ Bird was an Eastern Bluebird and the middle bird of the Bird family. PJ lived with his mother, father and newly-hatched sister Sally in a lovely polka dot painted bird house situated in a shade garden at the back of the Brubaker Property.
Each day, PJ would help his father forage for insects and berries. They would search amongst the jack-in-the-pulpit and wild ginger of the shade garden, in the meticulously planted rows of Mr. Brubaker’s summer garden, or the musty earth beneath the Trust woods that bordered the neighborhood. Then PJ and Mr. Bird would bring the food back for Mrs. Bird and little Sally.

About the Book
PJ is a bluebird who spends his days helping his family and friends, playing chase with his brother, Jack, and visiting neighbors. But one day when PJ’s curiosity leads him to a neighbor’s house, he soon learns that life is meant to be experienced beyond his parents’ nest. Still, he cannot help but think the future seems a little scary without his parents by his side.
Through the guidance of a wise chickadee, PJ soon realizes he already has the tools to live on his own. He can fly; he can forage for food; and he even has the skills to build a nest. The only thing he needs now is an ideal mate. But what he does not realize is that she may be right under his very own beak!
In this delightful children’s tale, a little bluebird sets out on a coming-of-age journey where he must prepare to leave his parents’ nest and begin his grown-up life, with help from a wise chickadee.
A portion of the book’s proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania.
About the Author
Heather Paterno is a family law attorney and children’s advocate. Her second book, PJ Bird, was inspired in part by the special relationship between her son, PJ, and his dear, differently-abled friend, Lillian. Heather resides in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Maria E. Gronlund is a prolific artist who experiments with many mediums and enjoys all forms of art. She is dedicating her first book illustrations to her two grandchildren, Owen and Gwen. Maria, a native of Pittsburgh, currently lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
