We drive along the straight, flat road. Houses line the street on both sides, battling each other for a view of the surf. The seagulls sing their magical songs. The smell in the air is that of salt, sea and marsh. Dad drives, the houses on his side of the car line the beach. Mom sits next to him, his copilot on all road trips. Her side of the road is also lined with homes, except these back to the marsh, lush with cattails and tall grasses. I take in all the sights, sounds and smells from the back seat. This is not the first time I’ve seen this exact view. Each year we spend the summer at the beach house. Although the years continue to pass, this small town never changes.
