Dear Granddad,
I can hardly believe what I am now writing to you in this email about my plans for this summer, but here goes. Dr. David Bergstein, my doctoral advisor, asked me to come by his office just two days ago and said, “I have an opportunity I want to offer to you.” Then what followed his statement was almost beyond my imagination.
When I went to his office, he said, “I am a friend and colleague of Dr. David Logan, professor of International Studies and Social Policy here at the university, and guest professor at MIT each summer. He has a very unique retreat home on the top of Eagles View Mountain, overlooking the mountain town of Alpine. It’s no secret that Dr. Logan has considerable financial means, which he shares generously. One way he shares is to make his retreat home on top of Eagles View Mountain available to doctoral students, working on their dissertation. Each year while he is teaching during the summer at MIT, a student is invited to live and write there. It’s a wonderful place to gain perspective. So, I was thinking it would be a special place for you to work on your dissertation. I wonder if you would be interested in being his guest there this summer, at no cost whatsoever to you.”
I responded in amazement. “Would I be interested?” I said. “Sounds too good to be true. But, yes, I would be interested!”
Dr. Bergstein said, “Okay. I will begin to make the arrangements immediately.”
So, I have been packing up my things and the resource material I want to take and will be on my way tomorrow morning for the town of Alpine and Eagles View Mountain. Your books will be included. They already give an “Eagles View” perspective on life.
Perhaps there will be a time later when we could sit on the farmhouse porch and I could tell you all about my summer on Eagles View.
