Late one spring afternoon our four-year-old granddaughter Eve was having lots of fun swinging. It began to get chilly, so I told her that she needed to wear a sweater. Saying “No,” she swung as high as she could. I pulled the swing to a stop and took her, kicking and yelling, into the house.
I sat her down at the kitchen table and put a pencil and a piece of paper in front of her.
Wow, was she angry! Neither of us said a word. Pressing down as hard as she could, Eve drew a stick- figure with a face with teeth on all sides of its square mouth. She scribbled a “word,” and then asked me how to spell “Nana,” my nickname. She then signed her drawing and pushed the paper over to me.
We broke out in peals of laughter. We laughed and we laughed. She ran around to my side of the table and gave me a big hug. “Read me a story, Nana, she called out as she danced into the living room.
