Dan Boyd’s life is a mess. Overweight and out of shape, his doctor warns him to make serious changes or he won’t live to see forty. At work, lack of motivation has him bogged down when his boss, an old college buddy, warns him to make himself promotable or expect to be fired. Then, he goes home to find his girlfriend in the middle of moving out.

When charismatic CEO, Glover Richland, announces the company’s expansion into government services, Dan sees this as his chance to turn his life around. It’s not only an opportunity for Dan, but also a chance to do something good and rebuild the United States. Dan throws himself into his new endeavor with fervor while getting physically fit at the same time.

With the easing of government restrictions, Dan’s region expands throughout the northern part of the state, but with expansion comes reorganization. His old boss moves on to a new division, and his replacement is Dan’s rival and tormentor, Terry Pearce. Despite his success, Dan feels conflicted. When the needs of the public--now more customer than citizen--are at odds with those of the company’s pursuit of profit, how could he choose? Who should he serve?
