Water Moon
A moon crater slingshot
to a broken heart throbs,
blood to harmony. A pulsating volcano.
Your harpoon shaped fist spears a gut,
a perfect hit. I wiggle like
an armless cold-blooded vertebrate,
my splashing an epilogue. Your breath
on my one fish eye, unblinking.
A glass ball corned by a dead sailor
fingerprint, you drag a shoal by a vessel
along the bottom of the sea. A wide jawed trawl.
A thousand frozen grapes
popping off like corkscrews against
a hemp fence. This story ending like a
frosty thumbnail. A bleak snow cone,
melting light bulbs.

Gabby Baba is a graduate of the University of Houston and is the author of The Sullen Mist. She has competed in several poetry contests around the nation, and her poems “Enchanted Forest” and “He is Only Made of Bones” were featured in the Eber and Wein publications This Time Around: Anchors Aweigh and Best Poets of 2015. She lives in Houston.
