Wizard Fayleen Crystal pushed open a large wooden door, and stepped out taking a deep breath as she looked around at her beautiful castle courtyard. She slowly walked to her garden, with a few attendants following close behind. Fayleen swept up her watering can and drizzled water over her patch of beautiful white Wishing Stars. As she turned to water her many other flowers, she gasped and her hand flew to her heart. She stumbled back into her attendant's arms. Her eyes widened.
"She's awake! She's awake!" the wizard wheezed.
"Who, my lady? Who?" one of the attendants asked, supporting her arm.
"Witch Hazel! She's awake!"
The attendants looked to each other in confusion. Finally, one spoke. "My lady, that isn't possible. She can't be awake. She is sealed off in the mountains. Far from here. Guarded with our finest men, and the finest spells. It simply isn't possible."
"Look!" another cried, pointing to the sky. A beautiful red dragon soared above them, but was falling quick into a landing. As the dragon landed on the Castle grounds, a young man slid off its saddle and ran towards them, holding his arm.
"My lady, I bear horrific news." the young man gasped, trying to catch his breath. He gripped his torn shirt sleeve as blood trickled through his fingers.
"Out with it, Luke. What has happened?" one of the attendents spoke, her voice shaking.
"My men and I were on patrol in the hills, guarding the sleeping place of Witch Hazel, and we were attacked. Everyone else is gone. And Witch Hazel has escaped."

About the Book
Thirteen-year-old Lane Jackson has just suffered an unimaginable tragedy: losing both her parents on 9/11. Now as she arrives in rural Tennessee to live with her grandparents, Lane wonders if she will ever fit in or heal from the horrific events of her past.
After taking a walk in the same woods her mother once loved, Lane stumbles upon what appears to be two intertwined trees. When she moves closer to inspect, Lane falls through a portal and into a magical world of fairies and dwarves, elves and dragons, and witches and wizards that she mistakenly believes is a place of perfection. Unfortunately Wizard Fayleen, the creator of the beautiful forest, is weakening along with the forest. Things quickly go from bad to worse when Witch Hazel, the wizard’s evil younger sister, awakens and threatens to vanquish Wizard Fayleen and the forest forever. Now Lane must decide if she will escape and never look back again, or stay to protect the land and its inhabitants by defeating Witch Hazel once and for all.
In this whimsical tale, a teenager who finds herself in a magical forest filled with fantastical creatures, dangerous villains, and courageous heroes learns about love, courage, and the gift of new friends.
