We had just finished dinner. My daughter was barely eighteen months old, but already a handful. As I took her into the living room and my wife cleaned the table, I was getting ready to settle in for a quiet, uninterrupted evening. I was in graduate school and didn’t get many times when I could just relax. I was often overloaded with studies, work, and other responsibilities. Shamefully, that is the plight of many married graduate students. Everything has a priority, and family usually comes down the list. So when you get a moment, you want to cherish it and hope that life doesn’t throw you a curve. But life moves on and does not always listen to your expectations. It did this night.
When I went to the living room with my daughter, the telephone rang. As I answered, the thought went through my mind, I hope this will be something that will help us and not be some telemarketer. Little did I know!
“Hello.”
“Hello,” the caller replied. “This is Joe Aldrich.”
Immediately I was stunned. Why would the president of the university be calling me? Surely I haven’t done anything so terrible that the president needs to address it, personally.
As we began to talk, he started describing a construction project the university was embarking on with their newly expanding publishing company. He began to explain in a little detail about the project, the project manager, and the need for some help in one area of the project.
As I listened, I kept wondering, “Where is all of this going? Why would he take time out of his busy schedule to call me, a student, and discuss this special need that they were facing with this very expensive endeavor?”
Then he unloaded the reason for the call. “I want you to oversee this part of the project and get it done.”
Of course, I was shocked and humbled. I responded, “What makes you think I can do this? I am a student.”
“I know you, and I am sure that you can do this,” he replied.
Still overwhelmed by his confidence, I began to discuss the matter. He was persistent, even when I voiced all of my concerns.
Then he threw something out that stopped me cold.

About the Author
Dr. Charles Frangella earned several degress, includuing an MA. Degree and a PhD. He’s written poetry, collaborated with Nashville song writers on lyrics, owned a restaurant and commercial real estate business, served on missions, was a school administrator, spent fourteen years as a pastor, and has been an adjunct professor at the University of Charleston and West Virginia University. He and his wife, Marcia, have lived in Ripley, West Virginia, for thirty years.
