“But first things first,” Chris says and holds out his hand to Amanda as he had done twenty years ago in that very same spot.
“The hand thing that Gabriel told me about?”
“Yes. I promise not to pull back this time.”
“And I promise not to run off.” Amanda takes her warm hands from under her legs. She takes Chris’s cold right hand in both of hers.
The light dusting of snow has turned into a blanket of white which now covers Good Bear Lake from the town shoreline with Shadow Mountain in the background, to the dam on the far opposite shore, to Rainwater Island which is no longer visible through the naked Aspen trees, except for an intense tiny blue light coming from the direction of the barn. Someone inside has cracked the portal door open just enough to let out a glimmer from the reserve supply of love kept available for special occasions. Chris’s guess would be, that someone would be his grandfather.
The tightly-targeted beam strikes Chris and Amanda’s intertwined hands. They glow faintly blue for a moment and then fade. Chris and Amanda are both now fully and permanently human. Disparate parts who have become a whole.
As Chris and Amanda kiss, better by half than the rehearsal dinner kiss, snow continues to fall. The limbs of the family of Aspens that surround the inn creak their approval with the weight of the new snow, as the wooden Aspens on the Gabriel-carved front door open their black eyes and their leaves begin to grow. Love has returned to the inn. Everything is new. Anything is possible. Just as Gabriel has predicted.

Once in a Blue Moon, intended for all ages, is the magically realistic story of the Rainwater Family and their island in the middle of Good Bear Lake below Shadow Mountain in Colorado. Gabriel Rainwater is the family patriarch and Chris, his thirty-year old grandson. The Rainwaters are members of a clan of superhumans known as Rangers, whose mission it is to escort human spirits into and out of this world, and Gabriel is their head man. With Gabriel aging and Chris his only living relative, Chris believes he must be ready to be the next Rainwater head ranger and feels he must marry Lulu Big Sky, the daughter of the director of the ranger board of directors, Bob Big Sky, to strengthen their secret society. The difficulty is, Chris and Lulu don’t love each other.
The trouble starts when the day before the wedding Amanda James, the human girl Chris really does love, comes back to town. This, at a time when Chris is under fire from Jack Newday, a non-ranger rabble-rouser, who believes Chris to be Bigfoot, a misnomer that has followed rangers like Chris for over a thousand years. The problem is, Jack is right. Chris is Bigfoot.
About the Author
R. S. Curtis, MD was born on Christmas Day. And, because that is a special day, he has always felt something wonderful was going to happen to him. He has practiced orthopedic surgery in Dallas, has a fine family, wife, kids, and grandkids, gets to play golf and write when he wants, short stories, poetry, screenplays, and now his first novel. He was right. Something wonderful is happening to him.
