A Gardenia
In a lone pot besides a window,
the bud of a gardenia
rises above glossy dark-green leaves.
Opens like a delicate seashell
velvet soft flowers where beauty dwells.
Like an elephant’s tusk
the color of the blooms,
with an exotic perfume
that floods the living room,
settles deep onto the soul,
and sends to sleep fragrances on rugs
bottled scents in outlets snugged.
The gardenia besides the window
the purity of the Himalayan snow.
And behold the clarity in the petals—
a fitting canvas our dreams to write.
It speaks the language of love,
strange and awkward
for the human tongue to utter.
Bedecked in elegance and beauty,
rests on a garland made for eternity,
and the world adores with longing eyes—
a bouquet in which a gardenia smiles.

While growing up in a small, beautiful Guyanaese village perched on the tip of South America, Haimnauth Ramkirath became fascinated by the simplicity, rhythms, and beauty of nature. This love for the natural world is still one of the abiding joys of his life.

About the Author
Haimnauth Ramkirath grew up in a small rural village in Guyana, South America. He is a vigorous campaigner for social justice and equality, and an avid practitioner of yoga and Ayurvedic teachings. Today, the former teacher is a Controller who resides in Bayonne, New Jersey. This is his third collection of poetry.
