Elvira hen lived in a nice two – story house at the end of a quiet street. She was always kind, had a good word for all and willing to help everyone who needed it. One warm morning after breakfast, Elvira Hen decided to take a walk along the road that led trough the big woods. The sun was so warm and the birds were singing in the trees, what a nice day for a walk, thought Elvira. As she was walking and singing to herself, she saw a brown paper sack by the edge of the road. As she stopped to pick it up, a big bunch of money fell out of it. Oh my, she said, someone has lost all this money and probably doesn’t even know it. Elvira Hen counted it and found it to be $1000 dollars. She decided to go back to town and turn it in to the police station.

Elvira is a kind-hearted Rhode Island Red hen who lives in a cozy house at the end of a quiet street. One morning, after Elvira Hen decides to take a walk along a path that leads into the big woods, she makes a shocking discovery.
After Elvira finds a paper sack filled with money, she immediately takes it to the police station, where a policeman promises to find its rightful owner. But when no one comes forward to claim the money, Elvira suddenly finds herself richer than she ever imagined.
On her way home, Elvira sees a beautiful, big, blue, overstuffed chair in a store window. Even though she now has the money to purchase the chair, Elvira decides to wait for another day. Finally, after all the tax collectors pay her a visit, Elvira has just enough left over to purchase the chair. But soon Elvira learns that nothing is certain in life.
In this children’s tale, a hen who is determined to do the right thing must rely on friendship, love, and the goodness of her heart after she makes a discovery that leads her down an unexpected path in life.
About the Author
Arvon Swanberg was raised on a farm in Illinois as the only child of a loving couple whose family immigrated to America from Ireland and Germany in the late 1800s. This is his first children’s book.
