The sun chased away the darkness and painted her walls like the inside of a grapefruit. On most days, when the breakfast pan started clanging, when the morning birds started chirping, when the wooden floors started creaking, Addie had no trouble sleeping. But today was different. This morning, Addie sat on the edge of her bed, waiting. Hair in place, shoes on feet, coat buttoned. Grandma would be here any moment. She was sure of it. And when she pulled in the drive, Addie would be ready. Letter in hand, she read the black stamp once more: U.S. ARMY POSTAL SERVICE 11 MAR 1943. The letter had arrived with yesterday’s mail, but the stamp was over a month old. Then, she heard it. The pop and crunch of tires over gravel. She snatched an envelope from her dresser and within moments, she was out the front door, the screen door slapping shut behind her.

About the Book
Addie’s brother, Bud, is away at war. Addie misses him so badly that even a special letter addressed only to her does little to help. Determined to convince Bud to come home, Addie sets out with Grandma and Uncle Hayes to mail a letter of her own. Grandma has different plans, though. Will a special gift help Addie find the strength and bravery to support her brother and do her part? Set during World War II, Addie, Be Brave includes a glossary of Osage words and key information about Osage cultural elements.

About the Author
Mindy Standley is the creator of The Addie Series. She grew up on the Osage Reservation where she spent every June at the In-Lon-Shka, helping her family cook traditional Osage feasts and dancing. She lives with her family in Oklahoma.
