It was about twenty minutes longer until Dr. Adams opened the door.
“Hi, Bill! Good to see you. Is everything all right?” he asked.
“Oh, yeah. I’m fine. I just needed to run something by you and see what you thought.”
“You aren’t going to ask my thoughts on getting Purdue back into the winning column, are you?” he smiled.
“I think that’s too tough a job for anyone! No, I just wanted to talk to someone in the human medical field about something I’ve tried and you’re the only person I felt comfortable talking to.”
“Fire away.”
“Well, have you heard of autogenous vaccines?” I asked.
“Yes, but we really don’t use them in the human medical field due to the legal issues surrounding home-made type treatments. Go on.”
“Autogenous vaccines have commonly been used in veterinary medicine for the creation of immunity to specific strains of bacteria on a farm. It’s always been a herd-type issue. I think the premise could also work in treating neoplasias.” There it was, the opening.
“Well, I haven’t heard anything about that as a preventative of cancer yet, but it could be in the works,” he answered.
“I’m talking about treatment, not prevention.”
“You mean after a patient is diagnosed, you’d give the vaccine and the body would kill the cancerous tissue?” he pondered.
“That’s the theory. If the tissue specimen was taken and the vaccine made correctly, it could make the body specifically fight the cancer and leave the rest of the body alone,” I explained.
“So, you’ve tried it?” he asked with a strange look on his face.
“Yes. Successfully on two dogs. One had osteolytic osteosarcoma. The other had hemangiosarcoma.”
Dr. Adams sat quietly on his stool. He looked into my eyes.
He wondered aloud, “Gloria?”
It was all he had to say for me to understand the question. He knew our whole family. He had been Max’s physician for years. It was a surprise that Gloria had suddenly been rid of her cancer. He had heard the discussions about her at the hospital. None of the doctors were sure how this had happened.
“You did this on Gloria as well,” he quietly said.
“Yes, I did.

As word spreads of positive results, Bill is led down a path of questionable morals regarding illegal medical practices. The question becomes, is it more important to follow the law or save a life? Bill’s moral struggle could cost him a lot more than his practice; it could cost his freedom, but can you put a price on human survival?

William Scheiber is a lifelong resident of Northern Indiana. He received his degree in Veterinary Medicine from Purdue University and is the owner of a busy small-animal practice. He and his wife Sue have three sons: Garrett, Seth, and Caleb. He enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his family.
