Corky and Nikita become fast friends until the say Corky begins his first year of school. There he meers other children to play with and soon forgets about Nikita. Eventually, Nikita is so saddened by Corky's lack of interest, that she escapes her cage and flies away! She believes this is what he wants. The boy of course, is frantically upset upon finding her gone and soon learns a valuable lesson about friendship.

About the Book
Nikita is a beautiful blue parakeet who decides one day to escape her pet store cage and find an owner who will appreciate her sweet songs and friendship. As she soars high in the air, she soon feels a strong pull toward a house below her. After she makes a surprising landing in the home’s fountain, Nikita hears the sound of someone crying in an upstairs bedroom. It is there that she finds Corky, a five-year-old boy who needs a friend more than anything.
When Corky notices Nikita at his window, she begins singing to him. The two soon become inseparable playmates until Corky begins his first year of school and begins to ignore Nikita. As he makes new friends, Nikita escapes her cage and flies away, leaving Corky devastated and wondering if she will ever return.
In this charming children’s book, a pet parakeet rescues a boy from lonesomeness and teaches him a valuable lesson about friendship.
About the Author
Henry Lee Barnes, Jr. grew up in the suburbs of Chicago before moving to New York to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He later moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where he began what would become a lengthy career as an actor, model, and writer. Corky & Nikita is his first children’s book.
