Ghosts from the distant and recent past walked beside her. She bent her head toward the sidewalk but was unable to close her ears to the sounds of happiness of life living and to be lived, of children waiting to inherit all the tomorrows allowed them while they played and frolicked beneath a starry sky. Their souls held lovingly in the nighttime magic, not yet suspecting the vanity of their hearts’ and spirits’ attempts to capture and possess time as though their tiny childish spirits demanded time’s capture, not for the day, not for youth. Rather, time awaits not its capture, but its embrace when we most need the embrace of time and most yearn to hear its sweet whispers of immortality reviving the past memories of innocence laid to rest so many years before when innocence was shed.
Damn blood! Damn blood! Throughout the day and into the night, I repeatedly wash my hands; I’ve even bleached my hands. And the stain remains. Am I permanently marked? Twice I’ve witnessed; twice I’ve participated. I know what the nurse whom I replaced told me is true!
Whether the light suddenly rejected him or this place was where the light intended on taking him, he did not know. He found himself lying prostrate on dry, rocky soil. Raising his head, he looked to each side and saw no place recognizable. Confused, he scooped up a hand full of desert soil—grayish sand! He cried, “Where am I? What place is this?” Baffled, desperate, raising his head, he looked ahead. Near the hill’s summit, a man, apparently dead, his head drooped down, resting on his chest, hung from a cross. “Have you come to join me? Are you a friend of this world?” The corpse transmitted the words somehow; his mouth was swollen shut by death. “Who are you that I hear the dead speaking?” Meretricious answered.
“GBI 703, Sam Steele. What does Sheriff Roper need?” Sam sensed the hollowness and dryness in his own voice as he held to the fact that in twelve months, those words would forever seclude themselves in the past, and never again would he speak those words. He was at the point where there was to be an end to what had consumed so much of his life. Forty-one years of life had slipped by, and never would those years return other than by memory.
