When the quicksand reached Kenly’s waist, he panicked. But squirming only made it worse, so he tried to stay still. Keep your heart rate down, he told himself. Nothing to do but wait for rescue.
The regolith climbed his chest and then his shoulders. When it reached his faceplate, a fresh wave of panic hit. He flailed. By the time he regained control, his helmet had slipped below the surface. Total darkness, except for the ghostly icons projected on his faceplate. The oxygen level flashed amber at eighteen percent.
Kenly looked to the radio icon. The helmet, sensing his eye movement, opened a channel.
“Sylas, do you copy?”
“Yes, doctor.”
“I have some final instructions, in case I don’t make it. I want you to take command of the ship. Star was supposed to be my backup, but she’s not ready. You will be captain.”
“Understood. Now please conserve your oxygen.”
Kenly’s oxygen meter turned red as it fell to ten percent. With moist eyes, he closed the channel.
