I have asked many homeowners to share their stories, and although they all had different experiences, but the end results were the same. They all reminded me of a bad breakup with a range of emotions, such as self-doubts, hurt, embarrassed, disappointed, resentment, anger, and feeling out of control.
These conversations helped me to realize that home improvement projects can have an emotional impact on one’s life. Though I survived it, I knew I had to learn from these painful lessons, and turn them into something positive, so I developed a personalized online system to help busy homeowners like me manage their home improvement projects more easily.
Did you know that Homeowners spend more than $300 billion a year on residential renovations? And that their dissatisfaction with home improvement construction has ranked as one of the top three consumer complaints for the past twenty years, according to the Consumer Federation of America? Clearly, my frustrating home reno project was not an isolated event.
These facts helped me realize that I had an obligation to share my proven method with you so that you can use these tools to take control of your project with confidence and peace of mind. This is the reason WHY I decided to write this book.

Think of your home renovation as a journey; it’s like going on a road trip. Would you just pile into your car and hit the road without a destination or a navigation app? Hopefully not.
The most important part of planning your road trip is determining your destination. Then, you need directions to know where you’re going so that you don’t take the wrong exit and end up on a detour — or at the wrong destination.
Then there are other preparations you need to make for your journey. You have to make sure the car is fueled up, the tires are properly inflated, the fluids topped off, and everything is checked out for a smooth trip. You do all this so you don’t break down on the highway because that would delay you reaching your destination, inconvenience you, and result in the trip going over budget. (Also, don’t forget to bring snacks and drinks. And of course, you need to have an awesome playlist.)
Now, who is taking this journey with you? Make sure you have the right people in the right seats — and that everyone on-board is going to the same place before you leave. You don’t want to be driving to Six Flags, and then only to discover on the road that two of the passengers thought you were going to Disneyland. That’s some major miscommunication.
Now, back to your renovation project. Think about your answers to these questions:
WHY - Why do you want to improve your home?
HOW - How will your improvement project impact your life and the people around you?
WHAT - What’s your home improvement goal and priorities? What’s your project budget?
WHO - Who will be part of this journey with you to help you achieve your goal(s)? Are they on board with you?
Answering these questions is essential for this journey. Don’t worry. You don’t need to have all the answers right now, so don’t even think about putting this book down! We’re going to work through this together — and you may find that some of the answers may reveal themselves more clearly as we go along.
