“Maude, hide in the pantry potato closet, sweetie.”
Sam watched as Maude did as he requested, then he pulled the sawed-off shotgun from the top of the kitchen hutch. He sat at the table. He never dwelled on it much but being a son to a veteran had its advantages. With the stories his dad told him, what he lacked in knowledge, he filled in with imagination. Little did the lad know, that was rough medicine for him. Sam didn’t smoke, out of respect for his wife; but being as he was dealing with the one who had something to do with the incident that happened to Katie, he needed to calm down. He didn’t fancy being behind bars, and since to how he had already lived his younger years—wilder than any normal boy—he knew all about the jail system. When it came to Katie, he was tempted to but thought of Maude, and that calmed him down. Just as the door opened, Sam aimed. The sawed-off pointed right at Ted’s chest.
“Now, son, I find we have two choices: one, I can cut you down right here, or you can take your ass right back out the very door you just mangled.”
Ted smirked, started toward Sam, who shot right in front of his feet. Ted felt the powder dust his toes.
“Next one is right in your gut. Take your pick, sonny. I don’t care. Personally, I look at prison as free rent and food, so just test me!”
