“Did you hear that?” Damir asked Natasha.
“Didn’t I? This is a surprise, kind of like serendipity. You know, maybe it won’t be that bad. Maybe we’ll only be at Barajas for a few hours. Plus, I need to get up, stretch, and walk around. Not to mention, I am a bit hungry,” stated Natasha, unconcerned with the plight at hand.
Why doesn’t it seem to bother her that the plane is unexpectedly having to land in an offset destination point? Damir thought, This is probably part of her journey, to bend with the wind and not worry about the destination, to embrace and live each moment of the journey. On the contrary, for some reason this inconvenience was an irritation to Damir. He wanted to be in Morocco. He didn’t need some deviation stopping him. Due to his systematic nature, he wanted to reach his destination on schedule. At the same time, it could have been because he wanted to land again on his continent, and being in Morocco meant being close to Tunisia, closer to home.
Natasha was as cool as key lime pie. She smiled to herself. Whoa, back in Madrid. I didn’t see this coming. The place I’ve avoided for so long, but here I am, landing here once again. Why? This is not part of the plan, but maybe it is. Is this destiny making me face the inevitable? These thoughts raced through Natasha’s head like an Amtrak train. This is the place where I came face-to-face with who I am, who I was at one point in my life. It was a place that forced me to grow with several unfortunate circumstances. Yet it was the place that made me feel alive, at peace, curious about life. I found myself smiling just because I was happy to be alive. If this is to be, then I will embrace it, I will not run from this again. I will never run from myself again.

Natasha Wadis Banks is an English teacher who loves the topic of existentialism. She passionately believes that knowing one’s place in the world is of the utmost importance.
