This is Cody and he has Type 1 Diabetes. Cody checks his blood sugar numbers and takes his insulin which makes him a happy and healthy puppy. Cody goes to the doctor for an appointment and his doctor shows him an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor. Cody gets very excited when his doctor shows him how wearing the insulin pump can give him his insulin for 3 days with no shots. Cody gets very excited when his doctor shows him how wearing a continuous glucose monitor will tell him his blood sugar numbers with no finger sticks. Cody and his doctor decide that an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor are the best thing to help him with his Diabetes. Cody waits by the mailbox for his insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor to get delivered. Cody is on his way to see his doctor to learn how to use his new insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor. Cody learns how to how to follow the directions on his insulin pump and fill it with insulin. He then sticks the pump on his skin and pushes the button. Cody learns how to put in the glucose sensor and transmitter, then turn them on. Cody loves his new insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor. He feels proud wearing them. Cody can take a bath wearing them. Cody can take a nap wearing them. Cody can play in the snow wearing them. Cody can play outside with his best friend Sammie wearing them. The most important thing of all is that Cody is a brave, healthy, and happy puppy and can still have fun! Cody calls and makes an appointment with this doctor to learn how to use his new insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor. Cody learns how to follow the directions on the insulin pump manager and put the insulin in his insulin pump and then on himself. Cody learns how to put on the glucose sensor and transmitter and turn it on. Cody loves his new insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor and feels proud wearing them.

This book is written to help children feel proud and brave wearing their insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors. The author uses words, language, and photographs that children can relate to and find comfort in. The story’s main character is Cody who is a lovable and comforting dog who goes to the vet for an appointment. His vet shows him an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor which he immediately falls in love with and learns how to use. Cody wears his new technology proudly and learns he can still do everything he did before. The author uses photographs that she took herself to show warmth, compassion, and a special personal touch by using her dog.
About the Author
Amanda King, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on September 3, 1993 and currently lives in St. Charles, MO. She will never forget the overwhelming feeling she had as she was being admitted to St. Louis Children’s Hospital. If Amanda felt this way at 14 years old, what about those children who are too young to understand the what and why of Diabetes. She saw the need for a book that explained Diabetes on the appropriate age and developmental level for a young child and decided to fill that need. The first book was a huge success and Cody helped children gain a better understanding of their diagnosis and brought them comfort. Amanda and Cody decided another book was needed to help children feel brave and wear their insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors proudly.
Amanda has her graduate degree in Early Childhood Special Education and loves teaching and learning from her students. She believes that reading is one of the most important parts of learning and books are not only educational but can also provide comfort and support.
