About the Book

Maggie and her brothers are frustrated by a rainy day which has kept them cooped up inside. To make matters worse, they’ve been left with an intimidating babysitter, Scary Mary, who puts them to bed without even reading them a story.

Seeking adventure, Maggie and her brothers ask for help from the Magic Map on their bedroom wall and are transported to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. There they meet Olive the Octopus and her thousands of hatchlings and learn that life for a baby octopus is quite different from their own!

About the Author

Bruce Scharschmidt is a physician scientist who lives in San Francisco and enjoys telling stories to his grandchildren.
The giant Pacific octopus lives along the coastal regions of N. America and Asia. Adults weigh ~15 kg and have a radial span of 6 m. Females lay and continuously care for up to 400,000 eggs, which hatch in about 6 months. Hatchlings are about the size of a grain of rice. Only a few of the hatchlings survive to adulthood as most are eaten by predators.
