A Small-Town Gal
I grew up in Williamson, West Virginia, a small coal-mining town. My dad was a bookkeeper for Norfolk and Western Railroad, and we lived in a coal mining camp. My wonderful little town of Williamson--population about 10,000--was the greatest place to grow up, at least for me. I wouldn't have traded it for anywhere else in the world.
During the Christmas season the company for whom my dad worked gave gifts to everyone. People would gather around a huge tree in a lot owned by the company. Each child received a shopping bag containing oranges, apples, nuts, all kinds of candies and other things that I can't recall. My parents always received either a large ham or turkey (their choice).
We usually had a Christmas Service at our church where my Mother and I attended.
On Christmas Day, nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, was open, not even a gasoline station. Even the folks who did not share our faith in God showed their respect for Christians by closing their doors on Christmas Day.
For a small town, we had a lot to offer our young people. There were three theatres, swimming pool, two drug stores (great hang-out places for us teens), a roller rink, and a youth center. We usually went to the youth center after Friday night football games. So, there was always something to do. Hanging out with friends was a very important part of my life, a wonderful learning experience, as well as developing lifetime relationships. How great is that!
I would not take anything in the world for my childhood days and the memories I will always cherish. Were they perfect? No. Did we have everything we wanted? No. But we had everything we needed. God provided. I guess a lot of people would have considered us poor. Funny thing, we didn’t even know it.
I am thankful for my heritage, who I am, and what I have become.

About the Author
Patricia Anne Brown Ferguson enrolled in Bowling Green Buiness University, Bowling Green, KY in 1955, where she studied accounting and other business related subjects.
In 2000 Patricia launched “Patricia’s Home Page,” a Christian website, which she maintained for 15 years.
Patricia and her husband, Ray, were married in 1953. They have 2 daughters, Laura and Carol and 1 grandchild, Alyssa Joy. They currently reside in Stephens City, VA.
