Vistas
A person living on an island can’t
Imagine life without the endless sea
Surrounding his small world, nor would he want
To live without that blue serenity.
The farmer living in the middle of
The continent experiences long
And sweeping vistas where land and sky above
Engulf his consciousness with nature’s song.
And so, environments are what we see
And feel, enveloping our very senses;
A world of limited infinity,
Of arts, humanities, and sciences.
Your presence, thus, is my environment:
My sea, my land, my very continent.
Today
I cannot stop the days from rushing past,
Or keep the years from rusting my old bones,
Or capture youth that I know will not last,
Or silence cackles of the aging crones.
Reality of time is ever now;
I’ll not deny the rush of tidal flow
Of seas that run from this our frigate’s bow
To wake the memories where they must go.
But here I see you with your auburn hair
That sits upon your shoulder with the sun
And know that time must wallow in despair,
For in his game of age, your beauty’s won.
So I’ll not mourn the joy of bygone flowers
That wilted yesterday; today is ours.

Using a contemporary idiom, Victor Barranca shares a collection of poems that explore the awe of love and nature as well as the fear of dangerous politics within classical and experimental forms of verse. While poignantly reflecting on the current state of the world, Barranca provides a safe place for others to do the same while navigating through a human sea to seek and understand the truth, and conquer darkness with light.
My Music is a volume of sonnets, monologues, and other writings that use a contemporary idiom to explore nature, love, and current events.
About the Author
Victor Barranca is a native of Brooklyn, New York, an actor who has performed roles from Shakespeare to Arthur Miller, and a lifelong student and teacher of literature, especially poetry and drama. He holds degrees from St. Francis College (Brooklyn), Brooklyn College, and Long Island University, and is a proud husband, father, and grandfather. This is his first book of poems.
