Our heroine, Kate is already set up to have an unfortunate life by the time she is born. Her brother had passed away by this time. When Kate was four years old, her parents, Hudson and Linda, file for a divorce after several awful and unhealthy arguments.
Hudson is eventually fired from his leadership position in his business and his medication prescription for leukemia has ended since he could not afford it anymore. He eventually loses his confidence and then goes to work for a drug company.
Meanwhile, Linda becomes a teacher and grieves over her and Hudson’s recent loss of Kate, who went missing while they went on a trip together to the Grand Central Terminal in New York City.
Max discovers Kate while working in the Grand Central branch of Zaro’s Bakery. At the same time, he wins the NY Lottery. He thinks that Kate is a fortune girl and the luck has come through her. After he wins, he and his wife, Julia, adopt Kate and move to Los Angeles. Max and Julia exceed their expectations in business and establish the Kate Foundation as they nurture their found child. Max's longtime friend and business affiliate, Dave, comes to help Max and Julia build and run the foundation from the ground up.
Throughout the years, Kate becomes well educated, develops her skills, and learns proper manners. She attends some of the top schools in the country and ends up at Stanford University for her undergraduate degree. While Kate is at Stanford, she goes on a study abroad program where she experiences some of the major wonders that India had to offer such as the Taj Mahal. During the trip, Kate develops strong and compassionate feelings for her school colleague, Jason.
Shockingly enough, Max feels the need to wed Kate and Jason to keep his luck going. Before Julia dies of a severe illness, she hands Kate a locket, which contains a photo of her real parents. Now is Kate’s chance to go find her parents. After the emotional burial service for Julia, Kate becomes disgusted over her adoptive father’s inappropriate behavior and the mistakes made with her upbringing,and she decides to leave him.
Departing from Los Angeles, Kate travels New York City to search for her parents. With Jason’s help, she manages to find Hudson and Linda, and they all have a wonderful reunion in the end. Meanwhile, Max is discovered dead in his car after having committed suicide.
During the reunion, Kate meets Jason’s father, Mr. Titus. He is an official in New York State and holds a high government position. After Kate enjoys a great reunion with her parents, she and Jason apply for graduate school and end up attending Columbia University from which they graduate three years later. After finishing graduate school debt free, Jason proposes to Kate and they agree to marry.
During Kate's birthday celebration, she tumbles down a long flight of stairs and blacks out. She is immediately hospitalized. During Kate’s medical examination, Dr. Diana diagnoses her with stage three stomach cancer. Getting word of the horrible news, Jason desperately rushes to the hospital in a car to see Kate. But as he is heading to her, he unfortunately was in a major collision with a heavy truck and dies. Before Jason dies the following morning, he requests that he and Kate be wed in spirit.
Senator Titus plans the spiritual wedding of Kate and Jason. The ceremony proceeds and the priest announces the couple as husband and wife before their dual burial. Many from their families and even some very famous people attend the wedding.
Four years later, a child stands alone and lost at Grand Central Terminal. He misses his parents and longs to find them again! One story has ended while another is born.

Max finds Kate just as he wins the New York lottery. He moves Kate to Los Angeles, where she meets Julia. Julia becomes the mother Kate never had, but she still sometimes thinks of her parents in New York. Kate’s once unfortunate life becomes one of adventure when she meets Jason at the Taj Mahal in India.
When Julia dies, though, Kate feels the pullback to New York, where she now seeks her birth parents and some kind of reconciliation. However, matters of the heart are never simple, as Kate’s challenges have only just begun.
