Jenny and Nurl of Nain circled the huge cavern, looking for anything that they might take home to show other kids. Rocks were so heavy, so they just chose some small, broken, sparkling pieces and stuffed them in their backpacks for later.
“Oh Nurl ...” Jenny screamed, “LOOK over there!” Over in the corner was a very large, but beautiful boulder, all consisting of amethyst-colored crystals. Around it was other smaller boulders with crystals of various colors. The girls just could not believe it. Huge crystals were jutting out everywhere!
“Jenny, we just have to break off some pieces of these crystals to take back with us … if we don't, no one will ever believe us when we tell them what we saw!”
Nur got her hammer and chisel out and began to chisel off a piece of both of them to take back. Nur placed her chisel in the right spot to break off the perfect shaped piece. She struck a blow and the large crystal piece broke off, landing right on the ground in front of her.
As Nur was tucking the crystal piece carefully in her backpack, Jenny shouted ... “Nur … LOOK!” She pointed to a tiny, trickling stream of water coming from the hole where the stone had been.
“Isn't that cute”, Jenny said, “there's a small stream of water coming out from that rock!” Both girls bent down on their knees to look. All of a sudden, the remaining crystals broke wide apart and water gushed out like a river. The girls were knocked backward, fighting to get out of the water's pathway!
“Oh my GOSH!!” Nur screamed.
“JENNY … the cavern is starting to fill with water … we've GOT to get out of here QUICK!!”
Soaked and scared, the girls grabbed their stuff and began to look for a quick way out. The water flowed out through the way they had come in, so they couldn't go out that way. There were so many stalactites everywhere that they just could see no other quick way to get out! Nurl finally spotted what looked like a flat ledge about 20 feet above.
“Look Jenny, I think that ledge might be a safe spot!” The girls climbed furiously up the ragged rocks until Nur grabbed onto the corner of the ledge, Jenny following. Both girls crawled up on it to safety. What a sight below!
“Nurl ...”, Jenny said, her voice quivering, “How are we ever going to get out of here? Nobody knows where we are!”
“I don't know Jenny … but let's pray to Jesus to help us to be safe and find a way out!” They did! The girls scooted back on the ledge as far as they could, soaked, and wondering what they would encounter now! The ledge surface was quite small. It was hard getting all their stuff to stay on but they finally made it. At least it was high and dry!
“Keep praying Jenny!”, Nur said. “We have to believe that Jesus will never let us down or give us something we can't handle!” At this point, that was really hard to believe, but they tried. Higher and higher the water came.'
There was no way out! The girls were stuck! And … the water kept rising, furiously! Soon, it was up to their feet, then up to their necks. IT was all over!
Nurl and Jenny looked at each other, tears in their eyes.
“Don't worry Jenny!”, Nur said. “Jesus won't let anything happens to us – you'll see!”
“I know Nur”, Jenny said noticeably scared. She closed her eyes tightly, as the water slowly closed over both of their heads. Each said a silent goodbye to the other and kept praying!
All of a sudden, the entire wall next to the girls gave way! Water rushed in furiously behind them, straight toward another cavern. The girls were sucked into the water and went right along with it, sputtering and gasping for air! Nur and Jenny, luckily both found some rocks that they could cling to for safety until the water levels finally lowered. Their backpacks felt like bricks were in them.
It wasn't long before the water was way down again, running off in different directions. They were so relieved, but they were still shaking!
“OH NUR … you were RIGHT!! Thank you, Jesus!!” Jenny said looking up. Nur was just as tickled as she was relieved they were alright.
“This is the craziest thing I've ever seen!” Nur said, spitting out some dirt from her mouth.
“No wonder it is so beautiful in here … with this underground water supply to feed all these crystals and rocks! They laughed.
The girls looked around to survey the damage. Nothing looked the same at all. Where had they fallen from? How could they get out? Nurl and Jenny decided to crawl back through another broken wall to see if there was another way out of there. The underlying spirit of adventure had turned to one of sheer survival at this point, so they went through the wall.
