"Children with autism frequently exhibit paradoxical behaviors. They may show interest and excitement as they watch the rotation of a fan, yet they may display a fear response when someone gently turns on a water faucet. They often do not respond to any form of social stimulation, but there are times when they maintain brief eye contact and try to explain their needs with the use of simple gestures. They find certain types of sudden as well as ongoing loud noises very annoying, such as the sound of a radio or vacuum cleaner, yet street noise may not affect them. They often engage in repetitive activities with building blocks, or paging in books or magazines, and become attached to seemingly meaningless objects such as a pencil, or a paper clip. They often do not tolerate any changes in their environment, such as the moving of furniture, or rearranging simple items on their desk or in their room. They often fixate for extended time periods on parts and details of objects, such as a particular button on a shirt, or a specific leaf on an indoor plant.
It is a mistake to believe that all children with autism are intellectually deficient. While some have profound disability, others have high IQs. Some children have unusually well-developed special skills in areas such as music, drawing, spelling, and mathematics. The same is true with language comprehension and expression. Some children are markedly deficient in vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and pragmatics, while others can use language with relative ease. In some cases language development increases noticeably with the passage of time."

About the Author
Gabriel G. Feldmar, PhD earned a doctoral degree in psychology from Hofstra University. Over the years, he has made significant contributions to the field of mental health. He is currently a consultant to radio programs and teaches psychology in several universities in the New York City and Long Island areas. Dr. Feldmar resides in Queens County, New York.
Louis J. Puglisi, MA, CRC earned a graduate degree and certification from C. W. Post College of Long Island University and the Rehabilitation Association of America. For many years, he worked as a psychiatric rehabilitation counselor. Puglisi is currently a muralist throughout the New York metropolitan area. He resides in Southampton, New York.
