My Mommy always worked to help Daddy with the family income. She used to love her job, bouncing out of bed each morning, preparing breakfast and to-go lunches for all three of us. She hummed a favorite tune as we walked to the car each morning. Driving me to school, her face was sunny even on the gloomiest day. I could see that getting out of bed for Mommy was not so easy anymore. She followed our routine out of habit. Her sadness was like mine, but larger. She had to be a parent while carrying around the heavy heart we shared.

About the Book
Four-year-old Sydney is very sad when her father, a paramedic and first responder, dies from COVID-19. She and her mom miss him so much, and they try to comfort each other.
One day, Sydney starts taking piano lessons, begins to sing in a church choir, and realizes the power of Jesus’ love. She finds her sadness turning to pure joy through music, worship, and her faith in God. Sydney desires the same experience for her mom.
Love that Changes Sadness to Joy shares a story of hope as a child and her mother journey through grief, finding the rainbow at the end of their journey.
About the Author
Shirley R. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree of music in organ performance from Oberlin Conservatory, a master’s degree of music in organ performance from George Washington University, and a master’s degree in pastoral counseling from Norwich University. She has been a director of music in churches for more than fifty years. Smith has served in numerous denominations and worked with vocal choirs as well as instrumental ensembles and orchestras. This is her second book.
