AGING: CAN I STAY YOUNG FOREVER? Aging is a natural part of life. Humans are born, go through a period of growth and development, reach maturity, gradually go through senescence or aging, and die. Life is maturation. The goal of anti-aging is not about removing the process of aging, or even about necessarily prolonging life. Dying young is, of course, the only way to completely avoid aging, and for most of us that is not a desirable option. Patients ask me every day for therapy for “anti-aging.” If we were to take that request to the extreme, would they want to look like a child or even a teen-ager? When I ask them that question, the answer is overwhelmingly negative. Their answer is remarkably consistent. “I want to look as good as I can for my age.” I encourage patients to embrace the inevitable aging process that we all experience. The goal is to look as good and be as healthy as one can be for a given age. “Looking and feeling wonderful at a mature age is anti-aging”. (3) SKIN AGING AND PHOTOAGING Aging of the skin is broadly divided into two categories: intrinsic aging and photoaging. Intrinsic aging is chronologic aging; it is related to the passage of time. Photoaging is aging that occurs as a result of ultraviolet exposure, both from sunlight and artificial sources, such as tanning beds. Human skin, like all other organs, ages over time. Intrinsic aging of the skin is seen in sun-protected areas and is characterized by thinning of the skin, loss of elasticity, increased fragility, fine wrinkling, and decreased wound healing. Because older skin is thinner, the skin appears translucent and blood vessels are more visible. Skin cells from older people which are cultured and grown in the laboratory have decreased life spans and decreased response to growth factors when compared to skin cells from younger individuals. About the Author
Nancy Lee Silverberg, MD is a board-certified dermatologist who has been in practice in Newport Beach, California for more than thirty-five years. During her career in dermatology, she has treated more than 25,000 patients. She specializes in cosmetic dermatology and approaches to anti-aging. Silverberg is also an associate clinical professor dermatology at University of California, Irvine.
