So the two set off to find Mrs. Fox. They walked between the bright green bushes, over the hill, and sure enough, in a little knoll on the side of the hill was a den. As they approached the foxes’ home, Roxie noticed four fox kits laughing and playing on the other side of the hill. Roxie saw that one of the kits had a grey coat, whereas the other three were orange.
They walked up to the little door and Rex tried to ring the doorbell, but his paw was almost too big for the button! He tried again. DING DONG!
Mrs. Fox opened the door with an apron on, wiping her hands on a towel. She had been baking blueberry pies! Mmmmm! Roxie imagined the juicy, sweet blueberries filling her mouth.
“Hi Mrs. Fox, Finneus the frog just told us to come and talk to you,” said Roxie.
Mrs. Fox laughed, “Oh Finneus, he knows that I know all things in the forest…. except where my four little kits are right now! Anyway, what can I do for you? Besides offer you some fresh baked blueberry pie?”
As Roxie and Rex went in and sat down to eat Mrs. Fox’s pie, Roxie looked up at Mrs. Fox with a curious expression.
“Mrs. Fox, I noticed one of your kits is gray and all of the others are orange,” remarked Roxie.
“Yes! That is my sweet boy JoJo. He is the only kit that can sneak around at night and not get caught since he is so dark! He claims that is his superpower!”
Roxie thought superpowers were kind of neat. She then got back to the subject at hand….
“Mrs. Fox, I don’t have a mask. All my family and raccoon friends have masks, and I seem to be missing mine. Have you seen it?”
“Oh goodness,” replied Mrs. Fox “I surely have not. But perhaps Peter the Porcupine might be able to help. He is always getting things stuck in his quills!”
As Mrs. Fox gave them directions to Peter, Roxie helped her wash and dry the pie dishes. It was the least she could do for such a yummy piece of pie! Mrs. Fox watched her and told her what a kind little raccoon she was, beautiful inside and out and such a unique creature.

Rex and his sister, Roxie raccoon, are as alike as two siblings can be. The only difference between them is that Roxie was born without a mask. Being so different from her family and friends, Roxie has felt troubled for a long time. Rex knows this and decides to help his little sister with her feelings of being different. So Rex comes up with a plan that takes them on an amazing journey through the forest. Rex and Roxie meet many different animals who help Roxie discover what an incredibly beautiful creature she is, on the inside and out. This picture book for children communicates how your differences and imperfections are what make you unique, and what makes you unique is what makes you truly special.
About the Author
Morgan Williams has been a creative and imaginative storyteller since she was four years old, and this book was created and written by her when she was only six years old. Williams puts pencil to paper to express herself, not only about the things that make her happy, but also the things that make her sad. She uses her nurturing spirit and love of animals to documents these feelings.
