"What the hell!" I said as I hurried my pace with Carl close behind. It was indeed my house that all the attention was drawn to. A fire chief was in front and I rushed over to him. His name was Samuel O'Malley, a slim, sixty-something, 6'3" man with a calming voice. "Sir, what happened here? I live here," I blurted out nervously. "This here house could have blown up if we didn't get here when we did." "Blow up?" "Shit!" Carl snapped from behind me. "Yes, sir, the gas line was compromised in the home. It was full of gas when we arrived. God forbid you flipped a switch in that home and a couple of houses would blow." "But a gas leak? How the heck, I mean, I was just here at noontime." "Gas, my friend, travels fast. It doesn’t take long for a home to fill up with fumes that can blow up. In your case, it was an extensive leak of gas. There is an ongoing investigation into the cause of the leak now. I am not at liberty to discuss the investigation, but police detective Simmons over there will want to interview you and bring you up to date with regard to the investigation." "Can I go in my home?" I asked. "No, not at this time or tonight either," the Chief said as he pointed to the National Grid utility truck. "They are in charge here and we put our lives in their hands, so pay close attention to them." I looked all around at the neighbors standing at a distance and looking intently. Was something about to blow up? Did everyone want to watch the scene unfold like a live motion picture action scene? Did anyone even care if my house actually would blow up?
