About the Book

Confusion in acting is often perpetuated by the abstract language and metaphors commonly used by actors and instructors. Moreover, the behavioral models taught in acting schools are outdated, leaving many seeking a practical, modern alternative. In “The Actor’s Algorithm,” author David Ihrig introduces groundbreaking insights from brain science, explaining how the brain and central nervous system influence every thought, movement, emotion, and behavior in both life and art. Despite their importance, these mechanisms are rarely taught to dramatic artists, who are often left navigating their skills and creativity without a clear understanding of the underlying processes. This book presents a revolutionary system of acting that leverages natural brain functions to produce genuine behavior on stage and screen. Ihrig guides readers through a scientific framework for human behavior, distilled into seven actionable steps to fully embody any character. You will learn how to: • Harness your imagination more effectively, • Personify each character’s perspective by creating detailed memories, • Discuss and engage with your craft confidently, ensuring a robust foundation in your acting skills. “The Actor’s Algorithm” offers a tangible, step-by-step approach that demystifies acting skills and equips actors with contemporary, scientifically-informed techniques for authentic performances.

About the Author

David Ihrig is an actor and a teacher who offers a systematic approach to acting using principles from the cognitive, psychological, and neurobiological disciplines. As an adjunct professor of drama at the University of California Irvine, he designed the university’s first interdisciplinary course on the science of acting. He’s a founding member of The Artistic Brain, a theme of the UCI Brain Initiative, one of the country’s only brain initiatives devoting resources to an artistic theme. He most recently established the Irvine Theater Company, which integrates the brain-based model into all aspects of dramatic creativity while incorporating technology to enhance the audience experience. Lastly, he plays sand volleyball and drinks tequila every Wednesday in a weekly ritual that spans over twenty-five years. QUOTES FROM EXPERTS Emotion and behavior both emanate from the brain and The Actor's Algorithm shows readers how to activate key parts of the brain to produce authentic responses on stage and on film. The brain-based techniques in this book are the update acting has needed and are sure to make learning the craft of acting faster and easier. Paul J. Zak, PhD Professor and author of Immersion: The Science of the Extraordinary and the Source of Happiness. David Ihrig’s new book provides a novel, engaging and compelling approach to the teaching (and learning) of acting based on psychological and neuroscience findings. As acting is “pretending” to be someone, having or creating a rich understanding of a real or imaginary character, he proposes, is essential. Acting is, of course, much more than learning lines and movements, he argues cogently. As the character is more “fully” created, the dialogue and actions become “natural” outcomes. A refreshing perspective on an ancient endeavor. James L. McGaugh Distinguished Professor Emeritus Department of Neurobiology and Behavior University of California, Irvine In the diverse landscape of today’s acting training, 'The Actor’s Algorithm' emerges as a crucial update to traditional methodologies. Current training often relies on age-old techniques that don’t fully tap into the actor’s cognitive and emotional capacities as understood through modern science. David Ihrig’s brain-based approach fills this gap by integrating the latest advancements in neuroscience, offering actors a scientifically grounded method to enhance their craft. This book challenges the conventional reliance on intuitive methods by providing a structured, brain-aware framework that leads to more precise and emotionally resonant performances. In an era where authenticity on stage and screen is more prized than ever, Ihrig’s method equips actors with the tools to deliver deeply authentic, engaging performances that resonate with contemporary audiences. 'The Actor’s Algorithm' isn’t just a book—it's a transformational tool that redefines the boundaries of acting training in the digital age. Chatgpt4.0, Acting as an Acting Expert (08 28, 2024)
