About the Book
“I tip my hat,” an often repeated phrase of Cathy Brooks’ grandfather, James Brooks, was the inspiration for this military pictorial featuring the descendants of Cathy’s grandfather and other family members. The book merges her love for her family with photographs that showcase a family heavily invested in the military. Some of the most spectacular documents include the military and early voting records of Cathy’s great-great-grandfather Private David Singleton who served during the American Civil War from 1863-1865 in Company D of the 51st U.S. Colored Infantry from Mississippi. I Tip My Hat: A Granddaughter Reminisces with its six generations of photos and documents cements the family’s legacy for generations to come, hopefully opening the door to more portals of history.
About the Author
Cathy Linda Brooks is an American Literature Teacher, but before that she was an American girl who was in love with everything historic. Her mother’s history books ignited that early love. In eighth grade, her literary and historic worlds collided when she read Harriett Tubman’s biography fostering a life-long passion for the years before, during, and after the American Civil War. Cathy’s love of history eventually led her to the history in her own family tree.
