The morning bus ride, like my breakfast routine, went unusually fast. We are normally on the bus for about thirty minutes, so Allie and I get to play at least six or seven games online before we have to pack up and put our thinking caps on. Today, we didn’t even make it through the first level on “Legends of the Arctic Realm” before the bus was pulling into our school. As soon as we arrived to school and stepped off of the big yellow kid-hauler, I was again reminded that this day was not just any ordinary day, as I had previously assumed. Looking around the schoolyard, it wasn’t the normal organized chaos of noisy grade school students wandering around looking to avoid responsibility, and kindergarteners getting chased down by their aides and teachers. No. There was silence. There was order. There were lots of adults. “Am I at the right school?”

Sure, his mom does “normal-mom” stuff, but she also does “judge-mom” stuff, too, like taking emergency calls and carrying folders with her all the time. Using skills learned from his mom, Carter observes that school is unusually quiet and subdued. There is silence and too many adults, and Carter begins to think something is seriously wrong. Soon, Carter finds himself literally center stage in front of his classmates, and he has some important decisions to make! The Junior Judge is a light-hearted short story full of engaging imagery that brings you along on a not-so-ordinary day with the son of a judge.
