As she strolled barefoot onto the red carpet, her hips floated gracefully. Though it was a Sabbath Day, a holy day, there was in her visage a certain finesse I was instantly attracted to. I had never felt this way toward any other girl. Her manner was dignified and courteous. Whether it was my repressed carnality poking its head out from beneath my sainthood, I couldn’t tell. She was remarkable—the prettiest girl in the assembly of saints.
Sitting in the pew like a prowling cat, I waited for her to pass me and say, “Salut Milliardaire, d’où viens-tu?” But she didn’t know me. As she stood at the edge of the baptismal pool, she seemed at peace. Two deaconesses took her hands and brought her inside the water to meet the pastor. A girl sitting in my pew giggled.
The crowd stood, cheering and clapping as though Marie-Jeanne Lamartinière were making her entry in the battle of Crête-à-Pierrot to goad the Haitians soldiers against the French Army in March of 1802. I craned my head to see around the hundred curious souls that mid-Saturday morning at Temple Salem. Youla looked rattled for an instant by the thunderous applause of the assembly.
When I think of her on that day, a young girl at the helm of a boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean who had been told to find her way home to a Caribbean island, my emotions threaten to overwhelm me.

About the Author
Milliardaire Syverain, M.D. is a physician, philanthropist, pharmacist, poet, philosopher, and preacher of social justice who migrated to Boston, Massachusetts during his teenage years. Despite starting out as a taxi driver, he earned a B.S. degree from Northeastern University and an M.D. degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Syverain is a recipient of the American Collegiate Poets awards and has been published in the Stanford Journal of Black Expression. He has also taught Student Workshops on Political and Social Issues at Stanford University. Currently, Dr. Syverain is an innovative physician entrepreneur and practitioner based in Silicon Valley, residing in Palo Alto, California, with his wife Yves-Renee Jeremie. Along with creating a scholarship program at Northeastern University, he is also a co-founder of the nonprofit organization Friends and Children of Haiti Foundation, dedicated to improving the lives of Haitian children and families.
