I had to get over the grief of not having a child who completed his milestones as it said in many baby books. I spent many years reading and sharing with others about the experiences of the Special Needs community. I hope that in sharing my story, and those of others, I will be able to inspire you and provide you with strategies you can use today. This book also offers added perspectives from Black and Latino parents and autistic adults who have experienced many challenges. Many of the interviews I share in this book are from my recent years working as an anchor and reporter for the Black Information Network, 0wned by iHeartMedia. I was in a position that aided me in interviewing experts, autistic adults, and parents of autistic teens to learn more about autism. Statistics show that, over the next ten years, approximately seven thousand to 1.1 million teens will enter adulthood and lose access to many autism services offered by schools. When compared with other special healthcare needs, it was shown that teens with autism are half as likely to receive healthcare transition services, especially when they have other medical conditions associated with autism. Access to healthcare becomes a lot more limited once they no longer see a pediatrician (Laxman et al., 2019).
