About the Book
One rainy afternoon, an ordinary family gathers to encourage young Dylan. They share the story of her Auntie Christy’s years of hair-pulling, being bullied, and loneliness. Christina’s determination to overcome trichotillomania disorder is an inspirational, heart-warming boost for anyone who knows the challenges of mental health struggles, compulsions, or feels full of self-doubt. Through her parents’ care and perseverance, therapy, and gradual self-acceptance, Christina discovers that her best quality is not her hair, but the compassion she shows herself and others. Based on an inspiring true story, Tricky Trichotillomania is a multi-generational family picture book that illustrates how asking for help, finding support, and never giving up can lead to courageous action−and a rainbow after the storm!
About the Author
Christina M. Ishibashi is from Culver City, CA where she worked as a preschool teacher for nearly 20 years providing children with a safe place to use their imaginations and develop their confidence. Diagnosed with trichotillomania and an auditory processing disorder at an early age, Christina struggled to connect with peers and felt judged for her differences. Although these differences left her feeling lonely, and they fractured her confidence back then, she now sees them as the special qualities that make her the person she is. Christina’s hope is that by sharing experiences and age-appropriate conversations, her books can alleviate fears and concerns young kids may have, encouraging them to stay true to their dreams no matter what obstacles they face.
