As the chicks grew and joined the other chickens in the coop, they didn’t invite Bertha to join them. When she wanted to eat with them, they pecked at her and chased her away. When they were finished eating, she crept back slowly and ate the food that they had left on the ground. This made Bertha a little sad, but she wasn’t angry because her kind heart wouldn’t allow her to be mean or selfish.

About the Book
This book is inspired by my love of raising chickens. It personifies their motherly instincts and their individual personalities. Chickens, like us, exhibit feelings of rejection, wanting to fit in, and most importantly love.
About the Author
Danna Southwell lives in California with her husband of 53 years. She has 6 children and 15 grandchildren. She has successfully owned and operated her own piano studio for 44 years and loves watching her students master the instrument. She enjoys quilting, gardening and raising chickens. Melanie Burke is a lifelong musician and artist. She holds an MFA in music education, and teaches piano, voice and music technology in her private studio. She has 3 daughters and 4 grandchildren. She also enjoys teaching art classes in her community centers.
