The Prodigy involves a high ranking Stasi officer, his wife, and two-year old son attempting to flee East Germany shortly before the fall of the Wall. The Director and Deputy Director of State Security are determined to seize the child, who appears to be exceptionally gifted intellectually. The reasons for the boy’s exceptionalism are the subject of speculation by the parents but appear to be known by his pursuers.

In the final days of the German Democratic Republic, as hundreds of thousands flee the country and mass demonstrations grow, a high ranking Stasi officer discovers the leadership of State Security intends to kidnap his two-year old son for unknown reasons. Is it because of the boy’s extraordinary intelligence and does the leadership know something about the source of that gift which the parents do not? Amid the chaos of a disintegrating state, and the overshadowing question of whether the child’s intelligence has a natural or sinister origin, the parents desperately attempt to flee with their young son while the Stasi leadership invokes the entire power of the state to prevent them.
About the Author
The author practices tax and business law with a large firm, particularly estate planning and large corporate transactions. He is a graduate of Stanford University, the University of Oklahoma College of Law, and the New York University Graduate Tax Program and has served for a number of years on the board of a major medical research foundation where he developed his long-time interest in microbiology and neuroscience. Mr. Replogle has traveled extensively in Europe, particularly Germany. He enjoys skiing, golf, horseback riding, church, family, and reading.
