“Waves dance in and out
But when they got near,
Just like magic
They would disappear.”
This is how five year old Sam describes the ocean’s waves when he sees it for the very first time. The waves magically appear and disappear through their constant in and out motion. With a roar they appear with a splash and calmly and softly disappear once again. This phenomena affects Sam on this fifth birthday when he wakes up to learn that his parents have a surprise for him. They are taking him to a place he has never been before. The clues to where they are going are wrapped in a big box for Sam to open. As he tears off the ribbon and opens the box, he realizes they are going to the beach. He is very excited because he has never been to the beach in his entire life! He quickly puts on the bathing suit and beach shoes packed in the box along with beach toys and other beach goodies. Throughout, his little dog accompanies his family on their travels as shown by the lovely illustrations that children will enjoy. Little does Sam know that he will soon be completely charmed by the mystery of the ocean’s waves and their in and out motion. The story runs full circle through a mirror image review of the happenings of the day. It begins with Sam’s wonderful surprise awakening to his return home when he falls fast asleep thinking about the movement of the big blue ocean’s waves.
Sam is also in awe of the sights and sounds of the beach but his true fascination continues to be the magical ocean. He enjoys the tractor cleaning the beach, the planes, red kites, low-flying seagulls and helicopters in the bright blue sky. Though quite shy, he gets brave enough to ask some children passing by if they want to play in the sand with him. He is delighted when they gladly agree and happily share his bucket while they all take turns making shapes out of sand. He is intrigued by two lifeguards blowing whistles while sitting in their tall chair guarding the beach and all the bathers. When he steps on the sand for the first time, he is alarmed that he thinks his toes are sinking, but then he laughs at the sensation which ultimately tickles his toes. He is thrilled to be in the ocean filled with real fish! However, the continuous motion of the ocean’s waves going in and out truly continues to captivate Sam throughout the day. He finds the waves rocking to and fro like a cradle while the swishing sound they make moving back and forth is like a sweet sounding lullaby. Through Sam’s bright eyes, he tells us the story of his vision. He sees the beach in bright, brilliant colors. As the day ends, while leaving the beach to go home, the colors become less vivid. Finally, as they approach Sam’s house, it is nighttime and dark outside like Sam’s droopy, half-closed sleepy eyes. On the entire trip home, his eyes got heavier and sleepier as he cannot get the wonderful ocean out of his head.
Mother Nature had a hand in Sam’s joyful slumber. On the way back home while remembering his delightful birthday at the beach, Sam had frolicked in the unforgettable warm waves and sat on the soft sand blanketing the beach like a really comfy mattress. A gentle ocean breeze provided the perfect ingredient for a wonderful nap. Although Sam is far too busy and excited to fall asleep on his beach blanket, complete with a mattress of soft sand, memories of nature’s play in the ocean, its warmth and mystery will help him to fall asleep pleasantly and naturally. Sleep can be so therapeutic because it is calming. Furthermore, we all need rest, especially children. We can fall asleep with nice thoughts in our mind and have sweet, pleasant dreams.
