Dennis knocked on the door. No response. He knocked a little harder and they heard footsteps approaching cautiously. Otis dropped to one knee and Dennis bowed his head. Sister Agatha peered out. “Yes?” “Pardon me, ma’am, but we must speak to you. We mean you no harm, but you might be in danger.” “Please continue.” “There are two dangerous men following us. They are desperate and have guns. An accomplice broke a gangster out of the prison and forced us to come with them as hostages. The vehicle they were driving crashed up the road. We ran.” Otis stood, startling the nuns. “Pardon me, sister, we are telling the truth. We are cold and need to hide.” Sister Agatha looked into their eyes and ushered them in. Locking the door, she turned off the lights and went into the back room where Sister Mary was watching over the 3 babies in their cribs. “What is happening?” she cried. “We are in danger; these men will help us. Get their bottles, change their diapers, wrap them in blankets and shut off the lights. Unlock the back window in case something happens.” Sister Mary said, “Please Sister Agatha, I am frightened.” “Sister Mary, compose yourself. Do as I say.” Sister Agatha said sternly. “Sister, sorry to put you through this, but these men are dangerous. We will not let them harm you. Please be calm,” whispered Dennis. Otis peered out at the barely visible church. The snow gusts shielded it intermittently. “Sister Mary, is there anyone in the church?” “Oh, my dear God! The babies’ mothers are in the church kitchen cleaning up after supper!” She ran to the front window. “Ok sister, where is the church kitchen located?” Otis called out. “No, let me go. It would take me longer to explain than it would to run and get them.” “Sister, no!” Dennis and Otis watched anxiously as Sister Mary unlocked the door, ran across the street, and disappeared. Seconds ticked as they waited anxiously. The church lights went dark and the front doors to the church opened. Four silhouettes moved swiftly out the door and into the blizzard. Dennis grabbed Otis’ left shoulder, “Oh, no! Look! They’re at the church!” They looked through the window as Joey and Carlo struggled towards the church door. “Hello there,” Joey’s voice called out. “Can you help us stranded travelers? My car is stuck in the snow, and I need to call a wrecker. It’s getting dark.” He approached the women on the front door of the church and pulled out a gun. “I’m afraid I must insist. Carlo, get the door.” Dennis and Otis watched in horror through the blinding snow as the men forced the four women into the church.

About the Book
When the intoxicated son of a mob boss kills a man on the streets of Kalamazoo, Michigan, he is convicted and sent to prison. When the getaway vehicle slides into a ditch, they find refuge in a small church, where they hold three young mothers and a nun captive until backup from the mob boss arrives. Then the mobster’s son pulls out a gun and fires four shots. Decades later, the women’s three orphaned children, who were given new identities, are now adults. A successful businesswoman who was abducted during the escape and the retired police detective who investigated the escape and murders summon the three to northern Michigan, where they learn about their past. Shortly afterward, a twist of fate reveals their identities to their mothers’ murderer—and now their lives are in danger. In this novel, a mob boss’s son kills a man in a drunken accident, setting of a decades-long chain of sordid events affecting the lives of many innocent people.
About the Author
Randall Reynolds is a retired engineer living in West Michigan with his wife and their two rescue cats. The father of three adult children, he is a certified lifeguard who enjoys swimming, biking, and traveling. Two classic Mustangs and a Harley Davidson motorcycle keep him occupied during the summer months.
