Lorenzo ordered a beer for himself and a dry vodka martini with three olives for Daisy. After that scolding, he hated to bring up his pending trip, but he had no choice. He'd tell her and get it over with. "I just learned I have to go away again for a few days on business. I'm sorry. I know we had plans, but I have to leave soon."
Daisy's eyes narrowed. "Soon? What are you up to? How soon?"
"As soon as I can make arrangements."
Daisy fingered the long strand of pearls at her neck, then twisted them into a loop. "But we have tickets to see Camelot Saturday. I've been looking forward to it since I learned it was coming to Houston. You can wait until after Saturday, can't you?"
"I don't know. If not, you can use my ticket to take a friend. What about Cherry Chevalis?"
Daisy scowled. "Just because she's one of my bridesmaids doesn't mean I want to take her to a musical. I'll think of someone else to escort me if you can't arrange things better."
Escort her? A hidden threat? She wouldn't ask an old boyfriend, would she? Or her ex-fiancé? Brad or Brent—something like that.
He shouldn't have kept her waiting. Of course, after being apart for three days, she'd be annoyed when he was late and then learned he'd have to leave again soon. In a crowded restaurant, he couldn't talk about the plan he'd hatched with Charles Levin. Hell, he didn't want to discuss his money problems at all—anywhere.
Daisy pouted, sipped her drink, then twisted her pearls. This time the string snapped. Daisy gasped and put her hands to her throat while the strand slithered, snakelike, down the front of her dress and dropped to the floor under their table.
Lorenzo leaned under the table and reached for the pearls. They were coiled near Daisy's feet. He retrieved them, got back to his seat, and offered the broken strand to Daisy.
She glanced around. Her face blushed red. "I don't want them. You didn't have to grovel under the table and attract everyone's attention. They weren't worth much anyway. I'll just throw them away." She stared at Lorenzo as though he'd committed a major crime.

About the Author
After earning a B.A. in Education from Hiram College in Ohio, Jan went with her naval aviator husband to Florida where she taught school. Later, she earned an M.Ed. and learned to love sailing while living in Puerto Rico. She sold real estate in Virginia Beach before writing this novel.
