Niki was a happy, contented cat living in the city with his human family. His life was disrupted when he found out that they would be moving from the city to an unknown place called the country. He was very unhappy and afraid of moving. Niki’s life in the country came as a big surprise. He discovered that living in the country is not a dull, boring place. It is a great place to make new friends. His two benches on the patio are perfect places for relaxing, and they are great places for observing nature and the many different animals who live there. Those benches provide an opportunity to nap and dream, a place to observe and learn, or a place to investigate and explore. Because he is an exceptionally smart cat, he tells his own story of country living. He listens carefully to his human family as they talk about the animals near their home, and they share interesting facts and information they learn about the animals. Niki listens to every word. Niki is somewhat amazed at watching the animals. He has even learned to enjoy the chickens his family really wanted when they moved to the country. They provide such amusing and interesting entertainment. They also provide plenty of fresh eggs for the family. Watching the hummingbirds is like going to the circus with their unbelievable flying antics. Niki learned very soon that some animals should be seen from a distance. His experiences with a skunk and a opossum taught a quick lesson. He was stunned to learn that foxes have some of the same traits as cats. One of his favorite things is when the baby goats (kids) escape from the nearby farm and come to play. Life in the country has been a wonderful surprise and adventure for Niki. He loves his new life. He says, “ I like to call it my school. Just call me Niki, the Country Cat.”

About the Book
What happens to a contented city cat who was told that he would be moving with his human family to the country? First, he was confused about what is country. Then he felt fear and unhappiness about moving to a new home. His family told him that he would love it, but he was doubtful. A terrific surprise was waiting for him in the country. The country was not boring. It is filled with many animals that he had never seen. He was shocked to meet the dreaded chickens that he was sure he would dislike. He was entertained by many hummingbirds, he was awed by the beautiful deer family, and he loved the two new dogs that joined the family for Andy and Sophia. He was shocked when he learned that foxes have many of the same characteristics of cats. He learned a very important lesson about skunks. Recognizing the big ears of a jackrabbit in the distance is fun. Learning the sounds of an owl and a mourning dove was exciting. His all-time favorite thing to do is sit on the patio bench between Andy and Sophia looking out at the countryside feeling happy and content while Sophia rubs his head and scratches under his chin.
