As the adrenaline faded, the cold of the Chicago night rushed back in. Jack stood in the middle of the lower drive, his hands trembling—not from fear, but from sheer exhaustion that had rewritten his body without a safety net. He looked at his hands. No claws. Just shaking fingers, stained with the soot of Lower Wacker. “Stop acting like this is some curse,” Seth said, his voice softening until it was almost human. “You think you’re the only one who got broken? I spent two years in the wilderness, losing my mind, terrified that if I slept, I’d wake up with blood on my hands that wasn’t mine. I had to claw my way back to sanity alone.” He paused a foot away from Jack, closing the gap again. This time, his approach was calm and without threat. “You?” he asked. “The technology is with you. You have the guide. You’ve done in a week what took me years of struggle to master." Jack bristled, defensive anger flaring. “You don’t know what I lost.” “And I don’t care,” Seth countered. “Because looking back doesn’t fix it. The Foundation didn’t just give you a weapon, Jack. They made you the weapon. But they made a mistake. They forgot weapons don’t have to obey their creators.” Seth tapped Jack’s chest, right over the heart where the nanobots pulsed in time with his soul. “This power? It’s yours now. Stop mourning the man you were and start commanding the one you are. Don’t just survive it, Jack. Own it.” Jack watched Seth disappear into the fog of the sub-levels. He was alone in the dark, cold, and broken, but for the first time since the hospital, he wasn’t afraid. He looked up at the dripping ceiling, the “Executive” logic in his mind finally aligning with the man he saw in the mirror. “What’s next?” he whispered to the silence.
