About the Author
Lou Sears is a retired educator and cancer survivor whose life took a dramatic turn in 2013 when she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma—a rare and complex cancer of the plasma cells. Faced with a diagnosis she had never heard of, Lou began a determined journey not only to understand the disease but also to become an empowered and informed advocate for her own care. Drawing on her experience as a reading specialist, Lou immersed herself in research, sought out reliable information, and embraced her role as an active partner in her treatment. Over time, Lou transformed from a newly diagnosed patient into a knowledgeable voice in the myeloma community. Standing by her side throughout this journey is her husband, David Sears. A retired behavior specialist and elementary school counselor with more than 34 years in public education, David has been Lou’s unwavering care partner since the day of her diagnosis. He holds degrees in Special Education and Counseling Psychology and has also served as an adjunct professor at Webster University. David’s background in education and counseling has made him a steadfast advocate and emotional anchor throughout Lou’s medical journey. Together, Lou and David have made it their mission to support others facing a multiple myeloma diagnosis. As certified myeloma coaches, they mentor newly diagnosed patients—offering guidance, reassurance, and the powerful reminder that no one has to face cancer alone. Their shared commitment to advocacy ensures that others have access to the resources, knowledge, and encouragement they need to make informed decisions and advocate for their own care. The couple currently resides in the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area, where they enjoy being close to their daughters and grandchildren. Whether spending time with family or mentoring others, Lou and David continue to turn their personal challenges into a source of hope and strength.
