About the Book
Charity, With Every Breath chronicles the life and mission of the Sisters of Charity Halifax from 2002 to 2026, a period marked by profound transition within the Church and the world. The congregation encounters shifting cultural views of religion, a global pandemic, and the reality of diminishing numbers of women religious, both globally and within their own community. As the Sisters come to terms with their own completion as a congregation, they respond not with retreat, but by living their charism of charity with courage, grace, and a deep-rooted hope grounded in faith. The book highlights pivotal moments that shaped the congregation, including new expressions of ministry, evolving models of leadership, and their 175th anniversary celebration. Throughout these changes, the Sisters remain faithful to their charism of charity, offering joyful witness through prayer, service, and love, even amid vulnerability and uncertainty. Their story is one of transcendence, trusting the Spirit to guide them as they listen attentively to the signs of the times and the needs of the world. Written by Mary Katherine Hamm and Mary Beth Moore, the book blends historical reflection with personal narrative. As members of the congregation themselves, the authors share stories that are communal and deeply personal, offering readers an intimate view of religious life lived from the inside. Charity, With Every Breath also provides a thoughtful glimpse into a synodal Church in transformation, revealing a congregation that continues to discern, adapt, and remain faithful to its mission, living and loving charity, with every breath.
