Who am I? Isn't that a question that everyone asks themselves at one point or another? But when asked by her now, for some reason, it put him off. Some people are Caucasian, such as his Dad. Western. European. Actually, there are almost a billion people in the world who look like his Dad. More specifically, there are even 70-plus million Germans and Austrians. There are lots of them. And of course, there are Koreans who look like his Mom. More than 50 million, and even more if you throw in all Asians. Perhaps 4 billion. To that point, he could see plenty of Asians and Caucasians all over the Graduate College as he stood there now. But there were very few who were biracial. Only a handful who looked like him and his two sisters. In the US, the number was less than one hundred thousand. Maybe a lot less, from looking around his hometown in suburban Philadelphia. He and his sisters were in a world of their own from elementary school through their college years, and that includes his undergraduate days at the University of Oxford. He was never overly aware of being biracial or particularly self-conscious. His father and mother thought he and his sister’s good looks overcame any “prejudice”. But the flattery from others, which, to be fair, was frequent, always had some kind of qualifier, such as what was said to his sisters more than once: “So beautiful (OK), and such exotic good looks…”. Exotic. Like a white tiger or ghost orchid? Rare. The very definition of different.
