“I begged God to rescue us from the toxic environment we were trapped in. Looking back, what seemed like a long time for God to answer my prayers, was brief in His timing. Ultimately, God answered my prayers and the prayers of whoever else was praying for a change in our living situation. Although we were delivered from that harmful situation, the psychological effects were ongoing. The over five years spent living in that environment were filled with arguing, fighting, alcoholism, and various kinds of abuse. For years, I wrestled with my self-image and questioned why I was seen as the pretty girl that older men felt entitled to hit on and treat poorly. I transitioned from being labeled “the ugly duckling” by someone I was once close to, to being praised as a beautiful young woman who could get any job. It felt as though my worth was overshadowing my knowledge, personality, and intelligence. This pattern continued into my adult years and was a precursor to the traumas I would experience several years later. What I’ve come to learn about myself is that I am not just a pretty face. I am not simply a trophy for others to place on their entertainment stands or walls for their self-gratification. Neither am I an object to be possessed or controlled. I firmly believe that how individuals treat others directly reflects their true feelings about themselves.”

About the Book
I grew up with this belief system of what happens behind closed doors, stays behind closed doors. This toxic belief set me up to be a people pleaser, to the extent that even when I was 19 years old, I was still asking for permission to go out with my friends, while watching those close to be still doing their thing- no permission needed. I thought that in order to be accepted or approved, I had to become other people’s doormat, reporter, or their personal Cinderella. Fast forward to shortly after being rescued, my mission was that no one else would have to go through what I and so many others have been subjected to- Slavery and human/sex trafficking. What I discovered since then is that human/sex trafficking isn’t just an out of this country problem. It is happening in our own “backyards.” Further, relative abuse is a very real problem in this world and no innocent human being should be treated as someone else’s black sheep. When you see something, you say something. Through prayer, meditation, establishing healthy boundaries, and seeking wise counsel, I’ve been able to forgive myself and others for the abuse I was subjected to, but also own that forgiveness does not equate to reconciliation.

Raelynn Page is a wife, mother, author, and counselor. She enjoys spending time with her husband and children and sharing her story of survival to set the captives free. She is passionate about encouraging others to live their God-given life, free from fear and sharing God’s love with everyone she meets.
