Fragments of the Last Dawn

Kako. The sister fate chose for me.
She grew into a beautiful woman. One of sharp laughter and quiet strength. The kind of person whose presence filled a room without ever demanding attention. She was sunlight filtering through lace curtains. Soft. Warm. Impossible to ignore.
Her life was not marked by fame or grandeur. She did not seek greatness or glory. But wherever she stood, people noticed. Because Kako had a way of making the world feel lighter simply by existing within it.
And then … she was gone.
The day she died felt like the world had tilted slightly off its axis. They opened all the windows, like they were supposed to. They rang the bells. They spoke the words meant to guide her onward. Everyone said she had crossed over. The spirits said the same.
But they never told me why it felt like she hadn’t. They never explained how someone so vibrant, so alive, could vanish so suddenly.
Her presence lingers now among them. And yet, unlike the others, I cannot see her. I can barely hear her voice in the quiet lull between the spirits’ whispers, though the words slip through my grasp before I can understand them. I feel the pull of her presence when I close my eyes, like the distant tug of a thread tied gently around my heart. But no matter how hard I try … I can never quite reach her.
I thought I had made peace with her absence. Time has a way of softening even the deepest wounds, smoothing their edges until the pain becomes something quieter. Something survivable. But peace is a fragile thing when the soul is tethered.
And mine has always been tied to hers.
We were not born together, but we entered the world at the same moment beneath the same morning sky. The sun had not yet risen behind the hills before it painted everything in soft pinks and vibrant golds. The village celebrated our arrivals as a blessing. A sign. When Kako's parents died shortly afterward, my family took her in without hesitation. From that day forward, we shared everything that mattered. A home. A table. A childhood. Somewhere between scraped knees and whispered promises, the line between friend and sister disappeared. We became family long before either of us understood what that truly meant.
And now, even across the divide between life and death, I can still feel the thread between us pulling taut. The spirits want something. Their restless whispers circle endlessly around a truth they cannot fully reveal.
But more than that, Kako wants something. I can feel it in the quiet spaces between constant noise, in the dreams that linger too long after waking, in the songs that echo faintly through the corners of my mind. And no matter how hard I try to ignore it… the call keeps returning.
And I can no longer pretend I don’t hear it.
