When the author was six years old, to escape the dangers posed by the Soviets, he moved with his family to a village where there was no running water, no electricity, no coal, and no schools. Like many children from other families, the author was wandering on the Yellow Earth Plateau everyday whereas they supposed to go to school.
After several months of doing nothing, the children finally began to have some kind of education. The teacher was a junior high school graduate from the village responsible for teaching elementary students; a high school student was responsible for teaching the junior high. They had classes one week in the morning and one week in the afternoon.
Recalled by the author, there was no fixed curriculum either for himself or for his brother who was five years older. During the school days, the students did nothing but competing to recite Chairman Mao's quotations. Those who recited the most in quantity and quality could be the class monitors for one week.
Later, based on the author’s vague memories and his brother’s storytelling, the author completed “A Red Madrasa School Under Mao”.
A scene from “A Red Madrasa School Under Mao”:
EXT. HILL TOP ABOVE THE THREE CAVES - DAY
Hong (author’s brother) is testing a semi-assembled radio. His Dad is at the hill top with a view of the whole village and beyond. Radio signals are weak. No radio stations can be tuned in. His Dad is holding a stick up high, which has a wire connected to the radio.
HONG
Higher! Higher, Dad.
DAD
This is the best I can do.
Hong tries to tune, all of sudden, a Russian radio station enters. Dad's face looks serious.
DAD
Stop. Do not change.
An oral storytelling from the author’s childhood friend triggered him to complete “Five Sheep VS Two Human Lives”, a tragic tale occurred during the Land Reform period.
A scene from Five Sheep VS Two Human Lives:
INT/EXT. A DARK SPACIOUS ROOM/BY THE DOOR/IN THE YARD - DAY
JINGRU, a girl age 4, wakes up in Kang (a bed made of bricks with flue connecting to a stove) in a big empty room. Sunlight beams shoot in from the narrow lines on the door and the window. She sits up and looks around her.
JINGRU
Mom, Mom, where are you?
Her hair is fluffy and flies are buzzing on her face. A newly born baby sleeps next to her. Behind her, a blur image of a woman dangling in the air. This is her mother, PINGSHU, the landlord's wife. Jingru climbs down to the ground. After noticing her mom in the air, she goes to shake her mom's bare feet.
JINGRU
What are you doing up there, Mom?
Will you come down? Please come down.
A few years later, the entire family returned to the city where everyone was involved in the Cultural Revolution during its peak. Two intellectuals, colleagues of the author’s parents, were persecuted by the Red Guards. Their real stories were the plots developed in the screenplay Homeless Dogs Never Bite.
A scene from Homeless Dogs Never Bite:
Du Hesheng is not a friendly man. He can be extremely abusive and cruel to the political prisoners even though his high school principal warned him not to be cruel to political prisoners.
DU HESHENG
(Slowly brings out a cigarette from his top pocket)
You stinky Rightist is wasting my time.
I am here to get your attention and
you fucking pretend not hearing me.
How come you weren't blown into pieces by
unexploded dynamite? You bastard.
GAO SHOUREN
(Quickly brings out matches, trembling hands light up the cigarette)
Sir, there is no need to be upset with me
as I am a Rightist. I don't feel I deserve to talk to you.
DU HESHENG
On your knees!
GAO SHOUREN
(Scared and humble)
Please don't be angry.
My wife brought a carton of
Daguang cigarettes when she was here.
I will go to get it for you.
It’s just a little gift to show my respect.
DU HESHENG
No more fucking nonsense. On your knees!
After June 4th, 1989, the author moved to the UK to live and study, where he gained more diverse experiences and completed the script You’ve Never Had Sex Education?.
A scene from You’ve Never Had Sex Education?:
EXT. IN THE SEA - DAY
In the water, Ah-Dong and his partner are holding the lifebelt and kissing, after which, his partner dives in the water to give Ah-Dong an oral sex. After a few seconds, he pops out. He comes to Ah-Dong from behind to gently bite his shoulders and ears. After kisses, they start to masturbate for each other by holding the lifebelt with one arm. Tiny ripples on the water are clearly visible.
AH-DONG’S PARTNER
Do you think sharks might come after we shoot?
AH-DONG
That is possible.
AH-DONG’S PARTNER
If a female shark attacks you,
you might lose your little willy.
If that is the case,
your wife will be even more disappointed.
AH-DONG
(Complaining)
I never had sex with her.
How many times have I told you?
Why not believe me?
You are the only man I love.
After returning from the UK, the author met a retired military officer who shared his experience of two very different stories on June 4th reporting, which led the author completing Who Do You Think I Should Believe?
A scene from Who Do You Think I Should Believe?:
Late at night, Damei and Hero Shen start their pillow talk.
HERO SHEN
There is a special correspondent of
the BBC in the UK named Kate Adie.
I watched her report from
Tiananmen Square several times;
also, ABC News from US has a reporter
named Gary Shepard, who also
reported from Tiananmen Square.
I watched the video clips many times.
They don’t look like they are fake;
they are far different from our news.
Who do you think I should believe?
