Some call that, “The Parable of the Prodigal Son.” Later, she would love a Pastor who called it, “The Parable of the Loving Father.” She knew what it was like to be with pigs all too well, filthy, dirty, pigs. Pigs were considered unclean, and Jewish people did not touch or eat anything considered unclean, yet there he was wallowing with the pigs and wishing he was able to eat their slop, their rotting food. You see, when the reel in your head constantly repeats that you are “not enough”, then you begin to believe it and act as if that is the truth about you. You start believing that not only do you deserve to be with pigs, but also you yourself are not even worthy of them. You get convinced that you are beneath them. You forget all about being a child of God, being a child of the Most High King. All you see is your mistakes and all the ways you are not enough, and you settle for pigs acting as though you are the rightful judge and jury over your life instead of allowing God to be. Please do not miss that, “you settle for pigs acting as though you are the rightful judge and jury over your life instead of allowing God to be”!
Instead of reading the Bible and learning the truth about who we are, the love of our True Father, and letting Him speak to our hearts and minds, we believe lies and our own thoughts. We put words and judgements in God’s mouth, without ever seeking Him. We do all of this when God so wants us to come to Him. He waits ready to run to you when you come to Him. Ready to remind you that you are His child and because of what Jesus did for you at the cross, because of your professing your faith in Him and accepting His payment for your sins. Nothing you do changes that; you will remain His beloved child forever. Once saved, always saved! He longs to run to you, put His robe on you, and declare to all that you have chosen life again. You have returned home to Him! Declare that you are back where you belong, on the journey of life with your Heavenly Father who has already declared you more than enough as His Holy Spirit dwells within you the moment you give Him control over your life.
The moment you realize that you need a Savior, you can’t do life on your own, and you want to let Him show you His ways, He wants to lift you back to the truth and to see you unfettered any further by the lies that become like chains, so heavy and dragging you down, keeping you bound instead of running free to Him and with Him. Yet, we tend to be more like Adam and Eve and choose to hide from God. After Adam and Eve chose to disobey God in the Garden of Eden, they didn’t run to Him for forgiveness and restoration. Genesis 3:8 (NIV) shares, “Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.” Although the truth is we are never hidden from God, they hid, just as we try to hide. Psalm 139:5-12 (NLT) says the following:
You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!
I can never escape from your Spirit!
I can never get away from your presence!
If I go up to heaven, you are there;
if I go down to the grave, you are there.
If I ride the wings of the morning,
if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
even there your hand will guide me,
and your strength will support me.
I could ask the darkness to hide me
and the light around me to become night—
but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.
To you the night shines as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.
Did you catch that? Let’s make sure, so when the darkness lies to you about your identity, about darkness being greater than light, about anything you have done being too dark for God to love or forgive you, you will know the truth about it and fight your way out of it.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
Psalm 139:11-12 (NIV, emphasis mine)
No matter how dark your darkness is, it is like the shining light of day to God. Not a semi-cloudy day either, no, a full on, oh my gosh I’m sweating already, bright, sunny day! You are not hidden from Him. You are not beyond His reach. You are never, never ever, beyond His reach! You are not lost in the darkness. You have no need to fear the Light. Just come to know Him and once you know the Light, you just need to flip the switch and ask Him to shine for you. He is Light; He will be your Light. He wants you, loves you more than any love you’ve ever known, and will guide you out of the darkness and into His Light and family.
